A prayer cap touches your head every day, so regular cleaning matters for both hygiene and appearance. Washing and drying it the right way keeps its shape and colour for longer.
Hand washing
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a little mild detergent.
- Dip the cap in and swish it gently; do not rub or brush it.
- Rinse the detergent out thoroughly with clean water.
- Without wringing, press out the water by rolling the cap in a towel.
Drying in shape
- Dry the cap flat or over a round bowl shaped like a head.
- Do not dry it in direct sun or on a radiator, as colours may fade and fabric may shrink.
- Do not hang knitted caps to dry; their weight can pull them out of shape.
Care by type of cap
- White knitted cap: Wash it often to prevent yellowing. A little starch helps it keep its shape.
- Embroidered cap: Before the first wash, test a small spot to check that the colours do not run.
- Cotton cap: It may shrink a little in the first wash, so use lukewarm water.
Storage
- Store caps in a box or on a flat shelf where they will not be crushed.
- Do not put them away damp; wait until they are completely dry.
- When travelling, carry foldable caps in a cloth pouch.
