A prayer cap is with you at many moments of the Hajj or Umrah journey: in prayer, at the hotel, around the city and in the gifts you bring home. There is, however, one important detail to know about the ihram period.

Prayer caps and ihram

Men do not cover their heads while in ihram. So the prayer cap is packed away before entering ihram and worn again after leaving it. For women, modest headscarves are worn instead of a prayer cap.

Choosing a cap for after ihram

  • Light and breathable: Makkah and Madinah are often hot, and thin knitted, cotton or perforated caps are comfortable.
  • Light colours: White and light tones absorb less heat in the sun.
  • A spare: Taking at least two caps makes washing and changing easier.
  • Portable: Foldable caps fit easily in a pocket or small bag.

The prayer cap as a gift

The prayer cap is one of the most loved gifts after Hajj or Umrah. List how many people you will give gifts to in advance; stretchy knitted caps fit different head sizes easily. Giving a prayer cap together with prayer beads makes the gift more meaningful. See our gift guide for more ideas.
